Martijn joined the Center in 2017 as Executive Director. He is also currently faculty at ETH Zurich D-USYS, where he teaches on the MSc and BSc level.

Martijn completed his bachelor, masters, and doctoral studies at ETH Zurich in Agricultural Economics. His doctoral thesis focused on understanding the actions and driving forces of smallholder farm households through an economic case study in the Sri Lankan hill country. He then worked as a Postdoctoral and lecturer at ETH Zurich on a WFSC-funded project on future developments of the grain value chain. Next, he coordinated a United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization program focused on incentives for ecosystem services in agriculture. Before joining the Center, he worked as Deputy Head of the Directorate on International Affairs, Research, and Innovation at the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture. Since 2020, Martijn is president of the Swiss National FAO Committee (CNS-FAO).
