Travels with apples

The fruit-shaped sensor used to monitor temperature during transport, developed in the group of WFSC member Dr. Thijs Defreaye at Empa, was recently featured on BBC News online.

Sensor in Box of Mangos

The device mimics the size, shape, and composition of real fruit, such as apples and mangos, and the sensor at the core can supply temperature data during transport.

The BBC News article quotes Dr. Thijs Defraeye, the project leader at Empa, as saying: "If something goes wrong, suppliers will be able to access the temperature data from the whole journey and work out what happened. We hope this will help them control their sanitary protocols and cut the cost and time of logistics."
